Cuidados

Temperamento

Gentle, patient and sociable. Calm indoors, steady and methodical in the field. Can be a little stubborn.

Exercício

Needs one to two hours a day, at a steadier pace than most gundogs. Long walks, hiking, retrieving and scent work suit it.

Cuidados com o pelo

Brush weekly and hand-strip lightly a few times a year; wipe the beard after meals. Sheds lightly.

Treino

Good-natured but can be slow and stubborn. Patient, reward-based training works best.

Saúde

Hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, eyelid problems and a hereditary cerebellar ataxia (for which a DNA test exists) are known in the breed. Ask the breeder for hip, elbow, eye and DNA results of the parents.

The Spinone Italiano is an old Italian hunting breed from the Piedmont region, used for centuries to point and retrieve in rough, thorny country. Its harsh coat protected it in scrub, and some link its name to the thorny pino bush. After the Second World War numbers were low, and breeders rebuilt it.

It is a big, easy-going dog with soft eyes and a patient temperament, generally good with children and other dogs. It is calmer than most pointers but still needs daily walks and some free running. Expect a wet beard, some drool and a dog that likes to be close to you.

Sabia que…?

Unlike most pointing breeds, the Spinone searches for game mainly at a fast, extended trot rather than a gallop.
