Cuidados
Temperamento
Kind, calm and friendly. It is usually patient with children and tolerant of other pets. It is watchful, and its size alone deters most intruders.
Exercício
Moderate daily walks and relaxed play are enough for an adult. Avoid strenuous exercise in puppies and in warm weather.
Cuidados com o pelo
Brush short coats weekly and long coats a few times a week; shedding is heavy twice a year. Wipe the face and mouth regularly.
Treino
Start training early, while it is still manageable in size. It learns well with patient, positive methods.
Saúde
Hip and elbow dysplasia, eyelid problems, heart disease, bloat and bone cancer are among the known concerns. Ask the breeder for the parents' hip, elbow, heart and eye results.

Sobre a raça
The Saint Bernard takes its name from the hospice at the Great St Bernard Pass in the Swiss Alps, where monks kept large dogs from the 17th century. The dogs guided travellers and helped find people lost in snow and fog.
Today it is a calm, friendly family dog with a gentle nature. Its giant size means it needs space, early training and careful growth as a puppy. It drools, sheds and suffers in heat, and its life expectancy is short. For families who can accept that, it is a patient and affectionate companion.

Barry, the most famous hospice dog, is credited with saving more than 40 people and is preserved at the Natural History Museum in Bern.
