Opieka

Charakter

Calm, steady and deeply loyal to its own family, but reserved or suspicious with strangers and often intolerant of unfamiliar dogs. It thinks independently, as a flock guardian must, and is not naturally eager to obey.

Ruch

Daily walks and time to patrol a large, well-fenced garden suit it better than intense running. It is not a dog for dog parks or off-lead outings in busy areas.

Pielęgnacja

The thick double coat needs a weekly brush and much more during the heavy seasonal moult, when it sheds in clumps.

Szkolenie

Start socialisation and calm, consistent training early, while the puppy is still manageable. Expect a dog that cooperates out of respect rather than a wish to please.

Zdrowie

Hip and elbow dysplasia are the main concerns, as in most heavy guardian breeds, and fast growth in puppies needs careful feeding. Ask the breeder for hip and elbow results on both parents.

Badania zdrowotne, które zwykle robią hodowcy

O rasie

For centuries this dog travelled with nomadic herders across the steppes between the Caspian Sea and China, guarding sheep, camps and caravans from wolves and thieves. Local types vary a lot, and the breed is known by many regional names, including Alabai in Turkmenistan.

At home it is often quiet and slow-moving, content to watch over its territory from a good vantage point. That calm hides a guardian that makes its own decisions and reacts firmly to anything it sees as a threat. It needs a securely fenced property, an owner with experience of large protective dogs, and plenty of early, ongoing socialisation.

Czy wiesz, że…?

In Turkmenistan the breed, called Alabai there, is regarded as a national treasure and has even been honoured with a large gilded statue in the capital, Ashgabat.
