Umhirða
Skapgerð
Dignified, courageous and very loyal, the Akita is affectionate with its family and reserved with everyone else. It is independent and protective, and may not tolerate other dogs.
Hreyfing
Daily walks of about an hour on lead, plus mental work such as scent games or tracking, are usually enough. It enjoys cold-weather hikes.
Feldhirða
The thick double coat needs brushing a few times a week and daily during the twice-yearly moult, when it drops large amounts of undercoat.
Þjálfun
Akitas learn quickly but are not eager to please; calm, consistent, reward-based training and lots of early socialisation are essential.
Heilsa
Hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, autoimmune conditions (including VKH-like syndrome and sebaceous adenitis) and some eye problems such as PRA are seen in the breed. Ask the breeder for hip, elbow, eye and thyroid results.

Um tegundina
The Akita comes from the mountainous Akita prefecture of northern Japan, where its ancestors hunted large game and guarded homes. After near-collapse in the early twentieth century and again around the Second World War, Japanese fanciers restored the native type, and the breed was declared a natural monument in Japan.
An Akita is calm indoors, clean and usually quiet, but it is a serious dog. It is aloof with strangers, protective of its home and often intolerant of other dogs, especially of the same sex. It suits an experienced owner who can provide early socialisation, firm and fair guidance and supervision around visitors and children.
