Cuidados
Temperamento
German Shepherds are loyal, confident and watchful. They are usually reserved with strangers and naturally protective. Well-bred, well-socialised dogs are steady and composed.
Exercício
Give at least an hour and a half of daily activity, combining walks, running and training. Tracking, obedience, IGP, herding and agility are good outlets.
Cuidados com o pelo
Brush a few times a week; the dense double coat sheds all year and heavily twice a year. Long-coated dogs need a little more attention.
Treino
Highly trainable and keen to work. Consistent, reward-based training and thorough socialisation from puppyhood are essential.
Saúde
Hip and elbow dysplasia are the best-known concerns, alongside degenerative myelopathy, digestive sensitivities and bloat. Breeding dogs are usually hip and elbow screened and often DM tested, so ask the breeder for results.

Sobre a raça
The German Shepherd Dog was shaped in the late 1890s by Max von Stephanitz, who wanted a single, versatile working shepherd from the many regional types in Germany. The breed quickly moved beyond herding into police, military, guide and search work, and is one of the most widespread breeds worldwide.
German Shepherds are confident, loyal and eager to work with their people. They need daily exercise and training and can become restless or overprotective without it. Show and working lines differ in build and drive, so it is worth asking breeders what their dogs are bred for.
Sabia que…?
The first registered German Shepherd Dog was Horand von Grafrath, bought by Max von Stephanitz in 1899.
