Kopšana

Temperaments

Gentle, friendly and confident, rarely aggressive. Calm indoors, sociable with people and usually good with other animals.

Kustības

Daily walks and regular swimming; water rescue work, hiking and carting all suit it, while heavy exercise should wait until it is fully grown.

Apmatojuma kopšana

The long coat needs brushing several times a week and more during seasonal moults; it sheds a lot.

Apmācība

Willing and sensitive; gentle, consistent training and early leash manners work best.

Veselība

Known concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, heart conditions such as subaortic stenosis, cystinuria and bloat. Ask the breeder for the parents' hip, elbow, heart and DNA results.

Par šķirni

The Landseer shares its roots with the Newfoundland and is named after the English painter Sir Edwin Landseer, who portrayed white-and-black water dogs in the 19th century. In continental Europe, especially Germany and Switzerland, breeders kept it as a separate breed with longer legs and a lighter build, and the FCI recognises it under German and Swiss patronage.

Landseers are calm, sociable dogs that like people and are usually patient with children. They love water and are often used in water rescue training. Their size, shedding and drooling suit owners with space and a relaxed attitude to mess.

Vai zinājāt?

The breed name honours the painter Edwin Landseer, whose 1838 painting "A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society" shows a black-and-white water dog.
