Loyal and affectionate in private, the Sloughi is reserved and watchful with strangers. It is sensitive and can be easily stressed by harsh treatment or chaos.
Hreyfing
Daily walks plus regular free running in a fenced field are needed. Lure coursing and long walks suit it well.
Feldhirða
The fine, short coat needs a quick weekly brush. Shedding is light.
Þjálfun
Sloughis learn quickly but are independent and sensitive, so calm, gentle, reward-based training is essential. Early, gentle socialisation helps with its natural wariness.
Heilsa
The Sloughi is generally hardy, but an inherited form of progressive retinal atrophy is known in the breed and autoimmune problems occur occasionally. Ask the breeder for DNA and eye results on the parents.

Um tegundina
The Sloughi comes from North Africa, where Berber and Bedouin peoples have kept it for centuries to hunt hare, gazelle and other game in desert and mountain country. Morocco holds the FCI patronage for the breed.
It is a quiet and clean housemate, closely bonded to its own people and often aloof with others. It is sensitive to noise, tension and rough handling, and it does best in a calm, predictable home. Like all sighthounds it needs secure fencing and safe places to run, and it chases instinctively.

Unlike the feathered Saluki, the Sloughi always has a short, smooth coat, which helps tell the two breeds apart.
