Er þetta rétta tegundin fyrir þig?
Frábær ef þú …
- have space, a large car and a budget for a giant dog
- want a calm, friendly companion rather than a guard
- enjoy relaxed daily walks in the countryside
Hugsaðu þig tvisvar um ef þú …
- live in a small flat or have many stairs
- would find a short lifespan hard to accept
- keep cats or small pets the dog has not grown up with
Umhirða
Skapgerð
Kind, easy-going and generally friendly with people and other dogs, the Irish Wolfhound is more gentle giant than guard dog. It is sensitive and bonds closely with its family.
Hreyfing
Adults need daily walks and a chance to stretch their legs in a safe area; puppies should not be over-exercised while their joints develop. Long rambles at an easy pace suit the breed well.
Feldhirða
The harsh, wiry coat needs a weekly brush and comb, with light hand-tidying around the head. Shedding is moderate.
Þjálfun
Wolfhounds learn willingly with kind, consistent handling, but early lead training is essential before they outgrow you. They are not built for repetitive drills.
Heilsa
As a giant breed the Irish Wolfhound has a short life expectancy, and heart disease (dilated cardiomyopathy), bone cancer, bloat and a congenital liver shunt are known concerns. Ask the breeder for heart screening and liver shunt results for the parents and litter.

Um tegundina
Large hounds were kept in Ireland for hunting wolves and deer for many centuries, and with the wolf gone the type almost disappeared. In the 19th century Captain George Augustus Graham worked to rebuild the breed, and today it is a national symbol of Ireland.
Living with a wolfhound means planning around its size: a big car, room to stretch out, and costs for food and vet care to match. Indoors it is usually calm and sociable, though puppies are clumsy and grow quickly. Growth needs careful management, and the breed's short lifespan is something every future owner should weigh honestly.
Vissir þú?
The FCI standard sets a minimum height of 79 cm for males, and many dogs stand well above that.
