About the breed

The Small Munsterlander comes from the Münsterland area of north-western Germany, where long-haired bird dogs had been used by local hunters for centuries. Around 1900 enthusiasts collected and organised these dogs into a breed that points, retrieves from land and water and tracks.

It is a friendly, affectionate and adaptable dog, a little more compact than many gundogs. In a home with daily exercise and some work for its nose it is easy to live with and good with families. Its coat sheds and needs regular brushing.

Did you know?

Despite its name, it is not a smaller version of the Large Munsterlander; the two breeds developed from different lines.
