Is it the right breed for you?

Great if you …

  • have an active outdoor lifestyle
  • want a gundog that is calm in the house
  • can include the dog in family routines

Think twice if you …

  • are away from home most of the day
  • keep free-roaming chickens or small pets

Care

Temperament

Friendly, loyal and sensible, with a strong bond to its own people. It is alert but rarely aggressive, and can be a little stubborn.

Exercise

Needs one to two hours of activity daily, including off-lead running where safe. Field work, scent work, retrieving and long hikes suit it.

Grooming

The medium-length coat with feathering needs a weekly brush. It sheds moderately and needs no trimming beyond tidying feet.

Training

Willing and intelligent, but it thinks for itself in the field. Consistent, friendly training and early recall work pay off.

Health

Hip dysplasia, some eye conditions and an inherited red blood cell disorder (hereditary stomatocytosis) are known in the breed. Ask the breeder for hip and elbow scores and DNA results.

About the breed

The Drentsche Patrijshond comes from the province of Drenthe in the eastern Netherlands, where farmers used it for centuries to find, point and retrieve game on their own land. It was a working dog of ordinary country people rather than of large estates, and the Dutch kennel club recognised it in the 1940s.

In the home it is usually affectionate, sensible and calm once its exercise needs are met. It likes to be involved in daily life and does not enjoy long hours alone. It needs regular outings with room to run and sniff, and it tends to stay keen on birds and small game. With fair training it becomes a pleasant all-round companion.

Did you know?

Patrijshond means partridge dog in Dutch, after the bird it was most often used to hunt.
