Temperament

Calm, self-assured and loyal, affectionate with family and wary of strangers. It can be dominant with other dogs.

Exercise

Moderate daily walks and active play; obedience, scent work and strength-based games suit it.

Grooming

The short coat needs only a weekly brush.

Training

Intelligent but strong-willed; consistent, fair training and plenty of early socialisation are needed.

Health

The breed is generally robust, but hip and elbow dysplasia can occur. Ask the breeder for the parents' hip and elbow results.

Health tests breeders usually do

  • Hips (HD)
  • Elbows (ED)

Ask the breeder to show you the parents' results.

About the breed

The Majorca Mastiff, known locally as Ca de Bou ("bull dog"), developed on the Balearic Islands from Spanish guard dogs and dogs brought by British forces in the 18th century. It was used for guarding and, sadly, for bull-baiting and dog fighting, and it almost disappeared in the 20th century before enthusiasts revived it.

Today it is a calm family dog with a strong guarding instinct. It is affectionate and loyal to its people and wary of strangers. Early socialisation and consistent training are key.

Did you know?

The FCI name of the breed is "Perro Dogo Mallorquín", but on Majorca it is usually called the Ca de Bou.
