About the breed

The Kromfohrländer is one of Germany's newest breeds. It traces back to a dog called Peter, a stray that arrived in Siegerland with American soldiers in 1945 and was taken in by Ilse Schleifenbaum. His offspring with a local dog became the foundation of the breed, recognised by the FCI in 1955.

It was bred purely as a companion and it shows: Kromis are close to their families and like to be included. They are lively outdoors but usually settle well at home. Their low hunting drive makes them easier on walks than many terrier types, though they can be cautious with strangers.

Did you know?

The breed's name comes from Krom Fohr, a field name near Siegen where the founding dogs lived.
