Temperament
Calm, steady and very loyal, with a strong protective instinct. Reserved and suspicious of strangers, and not inclined to be playful with dogs it does not know.
Oefening
Moderate daily walks and free time in a fenced garden are enough; avoid heat and heavy exercise while it is growing.
Versorging
The short coat needs a weekly brush, but skin folds should be cleaned and dried regularly; expect plenty of drool.
Opleiding
Independent and slow to respond, so start socialisation early and use calm, consistent training.
Gesondheid
Known concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, eyelid problems such as cherry eye and entropion, bloat, heart conditions and skin-fold infections. Ask the breeder for the parents' hip, elbow and eye results.

Oor die ras
The Neapolitan Mastiff descends from large guard dogs kept in southern Italy since ancient times. For centuries it guarded farms and estates around Naples, and the modern breed was rescued and standardised after the Second World War, largely through the efforts of the painter Piero Scanziani.
It is a heavy, slow-moving dog with abundant skin folds and a dignified manner. With its own people it is affectionate and gentle, but it is a serious guardian with strangers. It drools heavily, needs careful socialisation and requires a strong, experienced owner.
