Cuidados

Temperamento

Vallhunds are friendly, alert and quick to react to anything new. They bond warmly with their people and are usually good-natured with visitors once introduced. Their herding background can show as heel-nipping or bossing other pets around.

Exercício

Plan on an hour or more of daily activity, including walks and something for the brain. Herding trials, agility, tracking and trick training all suit them well.

Cuidados com a pelagem

The coat is weather-resistant and easy to keep with weekly brushing. Expect heavy seasonal shedding, when daily brushing helps.

Adestramento

Clever and responsive, but with a bit of independent spirit. Short, varied, reward-based sessions work best, and early work on barking and nipping pays off.

Saúde

The Vallhund is a hardy breed, though hip dysplasia and an inherited retinal condition (Vallhund retinopathy) are known. Breeding dogs are usually hip and eye examined, so ask the breeder for results.

Sobre a raça

The Swedish Vallhund is an old Scandinavian farm dog, kept for centuries to drive cattle by nipping at their heels and to keep vermin down around the farmstead. By the 1940s it had almost disappeared, and a small group of Swedish enthusiasts gathered the remaining dogs and rebuilt the breed.

Today it is a compact, low-slung dog with a lot of stamina packed into a small frame. At home it is sociable and keen to be involved in whatever is going on. It is vocal, likes a job, and does best with an owner who enjoys training and outdoor time rather than one looking for a quiet lapdog.

Você sabia?

Some Swedish Vallhunds are born with a natural bobtail, while others have a full-length tail.
