Cuidados

Temperamento

Cuvacs are loyal, brave and calm. They are watchful and protective of home and family, and reserved with strangers. They are usually gentle with children they know.

Exercício

Around an hour a day of walks and time outdoors suits most adults. They enjoy steady hikes and patrolling a secure garden.

Cuidados com a pelagem

Brush the dense coat weekly and more often during the seasonal shed. The coat is weatherproof and fairly easy to keep clean.

Adestramento

Intelligent and fairly cooperative for a guardian breed, but still independent. Use calm, consistent, reward-based methods and socialise widely.

Saúde

The Cuvac is generally hardy, though hip and elbow dysplasia are seen. Breeding dogs are usually hip screened, so ask the breeder for results.

Sobre a raça

The Slovak Cuvac comes from the Tatra mountains, where shepherds relied on it to guard sheep and cattle against wolves and bears. Its white coat made it easy to tell apart from predators in the dark. Organised breeding began in the first half of the 20th century, when enthusiasts gathered dogs from mountain villages.

It is a solid, well-balanced guardian that is generally calmer and more biddable than some larger flock guardians. It is loyal and gentle with its family and quick to warn of strangers. It needs space, a role around the home and an owner who understands guarding instincts.

Você sabia?

Shepherds valued the Cuvac's white coat because it let them tell their dogs apart from wolves at night.
