Cuidados

Temperamento

Dignified and independent, the Afghan Hound is affectionate on its own terms and often reserved with strangers. Many have a playful, clownish side at home.

Exercício

Daily walks plus regular free running in a fenced area are needed. Lure coursing is an excellent outlet.

Cuidados com a pelagem

The long, fine coat needs thorough brushing several times a week to daily and regular bathing to avoid mats. Many owners use snoods at mealtimes to protect the ears.

Adestramento

Afghans learn but often choose whether to comply. Short, patient, reward-based sessions and a lot of humour help.

Saúde

Afghan Hounds are fairly robust, but hip dysplasia, cataracts, hypothyroidism and sensitivity to some anaesthetics occur in the breed. Ask the breeder for hip, eye and thyroid results on the parents.

Exames de saúde que os criadores costumam fazer

Sobre a raça

The Afghan Hound comes from the mountains and plains of Afghanistan and neighbouring regions, where it hunted hare, deer and other game over rough ground. Its long coat protected it from cold nights at altitude. The breed reached Britain in the early 20th century and became a show-ring favourite.

Living with an Afghan means accepting a dog with its own opinions. It can be aloof with strangers yet silly and playful with family. The coat is a real commitment, and the breed needs secure fencing and safe places to run, as recall is unreliable.
