Cuidados

Temperamento

Confident, alert and spirited, the Shiba is loyal but reserved and likes its personal space. It can be possessive of food and toys and selective with other dogs.

Exercício

Daily brisk walks plus play or scent games are enough for most; around 45 to 75 minutes. Keep it on lead outside fenced areas.

Cuidados com o pelo

The stiff double coat needs a weekly brush, but it sheds heavily twice a year, when daily brushing helps. It keeps itself clean.

Treino

Shibas are bright but stubborn; train with patience, high-value rewards and short sessions, and handle the puppy gently and often so grooming and vet visits stay easy.

Saúde

Patellar luxation, allergies, hip dysplasia and eye conditions such as glaucoma are seen, and a DNA test exists for GM1 gangliosidosis. Ask the breeder for patella, hip, eye and DNA results.

Exames de saúde que os criadores costumam fazer

Sobre a raça

The Shiba is the smallest of Japan's native spitz breeds, once used to flush birds and small game in the brushy mountains. Several regional types were combined in the twentieth century to save the breed from wartime losses, and it is now popular in Japan and abroad.

Shibas are tidy, often almost cat-like, and fairly quiet, though they can produce a piercing scream when unhappy. They are affectionate on their own terms and do not enjoy being held or fussed. A strong prey drive and an independent mind mean recall is rarely reliable, so they live on lead or behind good fences.

Sabia que…?

Shibas are known for the "Shiba scream", a loud, high-pitched protest they make when they strongly dislike something.
