Cuidados

Temperamento

PONs are confident, lively and loyal. They are often reserved with strangers and alert to changes at home. Their independent streak means they like to test boundaries.

Exercício

About an hour a day of walks and active play suits most adults. Herding, agility, obedience and scent work are good outlets.

Cuidados com o pelo

Brush the dense double coat thoroughly a few times a week to prevent mats. Shedding is modest, but coat care takes time.

Treino

Smart and quick to learn but strong-minded. Consistent, reward-based training with clear rules and early socialisation works best.

Saúde

Hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism and some eye conditions are known in the breed. Breeding dogs are usually hip and eye screened, so ask the breeder for results.

Exames de saúde que os criadores costumam fazer

  • Ancas (HD)
  • Exame oftalmológico

Peça ao criador que lhe mostre os resultados dos pais.

Sobre a raça

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog, or PON, worked with shepherds on the plains of Poland, herding and guarding flocks. The Second World War left only a handful of dogs, and the breed was rebuilt from them by Polish breeders, with the first standard written in the 1950s.

PONs are medium-sized, sturdy dogs with a thick, shaggy coat that often falls over the eyes. They are affectionate and lively with family, have excellent memories and can be strong-willed. They make good watchdogs and need an owner who sets clear routines, provides daily activity and keeps up with coat care.

Sabia que…?

A dog called Smok, bred in post-war Poland, was used as the model when the breed's first standard was written.
