Cuidados

Temperamento

Energetic, bold and self-assured, with a strong watchdog drive. It bonds well with family but tends to be suspicious of strangers. It can be noisy and quick to react.

Exercício

Needs more than an hour of vigorous activity daily. Herding, agility, tracking, hiking and canicross are good outlets.

Cuidados com o pelo

Brush the short, dense coat weekly and more during shedding season. Little else is needed.

Treino

Learns fast but has its own opinions. Firm, fair, consistent and reward-based training works best, with lots of early socialisation.

Saúde

The breed is generally healthy; hip and elbow dysplasia and some eye conditions are the main concerns. Ask the breeder for the parents' hip, elbow and eye results.

Exames de saúde que os criadores costumam fazer

  • Ancas (HD)
  • Cotovelos (ED)
  • Exame oftalmológico

Peça ao criador que lhe mostre os resultados dos pais.

Sobre a raça

The Appenzeller comes from the Appenzell region in north-eastern Switzerland, where it herded cattle, guarded farms and pulled small carts. Swiss breeders formed a breed club in the early 20th century, and it remains the most energetic of the four Swiss mountain and cattle dogs.

It is alert, spirited and loyal to its family, but often distrustful of strangers and quick to bark. It needs plenty of activity, work and clear rules. It does best in rural homes with an active family; in a quiet flat it is easily frustrated.

Sabia que…?

The Appenzeller carries its tail curled tightly over its back, which sets it apart from the other three Swiss Sennenhund breeds.
