Priežiūra

Temperamentas

Bold, loyal and self-assured, the Elkhound is friendly with its own people and reserved but rarely aggressive with strangers. It has a strong will and a hunter's independence.

Judėjimas

It needs at least an hour a day, ideally in varied terrain: hiking, trail walks, tracking, scent work or skijoring suit it well. Keep it on lead or in a fenced area near wildlife.

Kailio priežiūra

The thick, weather-resistant coat needs brushing a few times a week and daily during the moult, when it sheds heavily. No trimming is required.

Dresūra

Training works best with patience, consistency and rewards; harsh methods make it stubborn. Recall and barking control need ongoing practice.

Sveikata

Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy and a form of inherited kidney disease have been reported, along with a tendency to gain weight. Ask the breeder for hip, eye and any available DNA results.

Apie veislę

The grey Elkhound is one of Norway's national breeds, developed to find moose in the forest and hold them at bay by barking until the hunter arrives. Similar dogs have lived in Scandinavia for a very long time, and the breed is still used for moose hunting today.

At home it is affectionate and good-humoured with its family, but it thinks for itself and was bred to work at a distance from the hunter. It needs plenty of outdoor activity, clear routines and a secure garden, because a good scent can override recall. Expect a confident, watchful dog with a lot of voice and a lot of coat.
