Calm and composed with an air of quiet confidence. Loyal and affectionate with family, but suspicious of strangers and frequently dominant with other dogs.

Daily brisk walks and some structured work, such as obedience or tracking, keep it fit. It does best with predictable routines rather than chaotic off-lead play.

The short, coarse coat needs only a weekly brush and sheds moderately.

Needs early, consistent and fair training from an owner who stays calm. Ongoing socialisation is essential to keep its guarding instinct in check.
健康
Hip and elbow dysplasia are the best known issues, and bloat can occur as in other deep-chested breeds. Ask the breeder for hip and elbow results on both parents.

犬種について
Also known as the Presa Canario, this breed developed on the Canary Islands, mainly Tenerife and Gran Canaria, where farmers used it to guard property and handle cattle. Local dogs were mixed with mastiff types brought by settlers, and the breed was restored in the late twentieth century after a period of decline.
It is a quiet, self-possessed dog that bonds strongly with its own household. At the same time it is territorial and wary of strangers and other dogs, and its strength demands respect. It suits an experienced owner who will invest in thorough socialisation, steady training and secure fencing.
豆知識
The FCI changed the breed's official name from Perro de Presa Canario to Dogo Canario in 2001.
