Umhirða

Skapgerð

Outgoing, happy and affectionate, with little suspicion of strangers. It is lively and playful and can be boisterous when young.

Hreyfing

Needs one and a half hours or more of activity daily. Retrieving, swimming, field work and agility suit it.

Feldhirða

Brush the coat a few times a week and tidy feathering around ears and feet. It sheds moderately.

Þjálfun

Willing and clever but easily excited, so focus on calm behaviour and impulse control. Keep training fun and varied.

Heilsa

Cancer, especially histiocytic sarcoma, is a major concern and shortens life expectancy; glaucoma linked to goniodysgenesis and patella problems also occur. Ask the breeder for hip, eye (including gonioscopy) and patella results and about longevity in their lines.

Um tegundina

The Flat-Coated Retriever was developed in Victorian Britain and became a favourite of gamekeepers before the Labrador and Golden Retriever overtook it in popularity. Its sleek, flat coat and long head give it an elegant outline.

It is known for an optimistic, sociable temperament and matures late, often keeping a puppy-like enthusiasm for years. It needs plenty of exercise, play and training, and it does not enjoy being left alone for long. Prospective owners should know that cancer is common in the breed, so life expectancy is shorter than in many dogs of its size.

Vissir þú?

In Victorian times the Flat-Coated Retriever was so popular with gamekeepers that it was nicknamed the keeper's dog.
