Umhirða
Skapgerð
Dutch Shepherds are alert, loyal and full of drive. They tend to be reserved with strangers and protective of their home. They are playful and affectionate with their family.
Hreyfing
Plan on one and a half to two and a half hours of daily activity, including training. Protection sports, tracking, agility, herding and detection work suit them.
Feldhirða
Short coats need weekly brushing, long coats a little more. The rough coat should be hand-stripped about twice a year rather than brushed out.
Þjálfun
Very trainable and motivated, especially by play. Consistent, reward-based training and early socialisation are essential.
Heilsa
Dutch Shepherds are generally healthy; hip and elbow dysplasia occur, and some rough-coated lines have had an inherited thyroid and goitre condition. Breeding dogs are usually hip and elbow screened, so ask the breeder for results.

Um tegundina
The Dutch Shepherd was a versatile farm dog in the Netherlands, herding sheep, keeping cattle out of crops, guarding the yard and even pulling small carts. As farming modernised it became rare, but it found a new role in police and protection work, where it is valued today.
It comes in short-, long- and rough-haired varieties, always brindle. Dutch Shepherds are lively, clever and eager to work with their owner. They need plenty of exercise and training every day, but in an active home they are affectionate, playful and loyal companions.
Vissir þú?
The Dutch Shepherd comes in three coat types, and the rough-haired variety is the rarest.
