Hooldus
Iseloom
Shelties are loyal, gentle and sensitive. They are often shy or reserved with strangers but very affectionate with family. Many are vocal and alert to every sound.
Liikumine
Plan for an hour or so a day of walks and play, plus some brain work. Agility, obedience, herding and trick training are popular.
Karvahooldus
Brush the dense double coat several times a week, especially behind the ears and in the trousers. Shedding is heavy at coat changes.
Koolitus
One of the most trainable breeds, responding beautifully to gentle, reward-based methods. Teaching a quiet cue early helps with barking.
Tervis
Collie eye anomaly, MDR1 drug sensitivity, hypothyroidism and dermatomyositis are known in Shelties. Breeding dogs are usually eye examined and DNA tested for CEA and MDR1, so ask the breeder for results.

Tõust
The Shetland Sheepdog was a working dog on the Shetland Islands, where small livestock and harsh conditions favoured compact, hardy animals. Island dogs were later crossed with collie-type dogs and refined on the mainland, giving the elegant small sheepdog seen today.
Shelties are affectionate and closely attuned to their owners, and they excel in obedience and agility. They are often reserved with strangers and quick to sound the alarm with their sharp bark. In a home that gives them company, training and daily activity, they are gentle, adaptable companions.

The breed was briefly registered as the Shetland Collie in Britain until collie breeders objected and the name was changed.
