Hooldus

Iseloom

Pembrokes are cheerful, confident and affectionate. They are usually friendly with visitors but alert and vocal. Herding instincts may show as nipping at heels.

Liikumine

Around an hour a day of walks and active play keeps them fit and content. Herding, rally, scent work and trick training suit them.

Karvahooldus

Brush weekly and more often during the heavy seasonal shed. The coat is water-resistant and easy to keep clean.

Koolitus

Clever and food-motivated, but with an independent streak. Consistent, reward-based training and early work on barking and nipping help.

Tervis

Pembrokes can be prone to back problems and weight gain; hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy and von Willebrand's disease are also known. Breeding dogs are usually hip and eye screened and DNA tested, so ask the breeder for results.

Terviseuuringud, mida kasvatajad tavaliselt teevad

Tõust

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was a farm dog in south-west Wales, driving cattle by nipping at their heels and keeping close to the ground to avoid kicks. It was recognised separately from the Cardigan in the 1930s and soon became popular, helped along by its long association with the British royal family.

Pembrokes are lively, outgoing and very much part of the household. They are bright and quick to learn but can be bossy, and they like to make their opinions heard. They need daily exercise and careful feeding, as they gain weight easily, which is hard on their long backs.

Kas teadsid?

Queen Elizabeth II owned more than 30 Pembroke Welsh Corgis during her reign.
