Hooldus

Iseloom

Cardigans are loyal, even-tempered and watchful. They can be reserved with strangers and make good alarm dogs. Some keep a strong instinct to herd children or other pets.

Liikumine

An hour or so of walking and play each day suits most adults. Herding, rally, agility on low equipment and scent work are good activities.

Karvahooldus

Brush weekly, and more often during heavy seasonal shedding. The coat is weatherproof and rarely needs bathing.

Koolitus

Smart and capable, sometimes with a mind of its own. Use rewards and consistency, and work early on nipping and barking.

Tervis

Like other long-backed breeds, Cardigans can be prone to back problems; hip dysplasia, PRA and degenerative myelopathy are also known. Breeding dogs are usually hip and eye screened and DNA tested, so ask the breeder for results.

Terviseuuringud, mida kasvatajad tavaliselt teevad

Tõust

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi comes from the hill farms of Cardiganshire, where it drove cattle by nipping at their heels and ducking under kicks. It is the older and rarer of the two Welsh corgis and is easily told apart by its long, brushy tail and wider choice of colours.

Cardigans are often described as more reserved and steadier than Pembrokes. They are loyal and fond of their family, alert to visitors and surprisingly athletic for their shape. They need daily activity and sensible weight control to protect their long back, and they appreciate an owner who enjoys training.

Kas teadsid?

The easiest way to tell a Cardigan from a Pembroke is the tail: the Cardigan always has a long, fox-like one.
