Needs about an hour of walking daily with time to follow scent; nosework and tracking are ideal.

A weekly brush is enough for the short coat; clean the long ears regularly.
Koolitus
Gentle and food-motivated but independent; consistent, patient training and lead work are important.
Tervis
Like other long-backed hounds it can develop disc problems, and its long ears are prone to infection. Spine and eye checks are sensible, so ask the breeder for results.

Tõust
The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is the short-legged version of the Gascon blue hounds, used in south-west France to hunt hare and rabbit at a pace hunters on foot could follow. It nearly died out around the start of the 20th century and was revived by Alain Bourbon, who rebuilt its type.
It has the classic blue-ticked coat with black patches and tan markings on a long, low body. It is affectionate and easy-going with people and dogs, and many live as family companions. Expect a vocal, nose-driven dog that needs regular sniffing walks and careful weight control.
