Cuidados

Carácter

Cheerful, playful and affectionate, with a bright sense of humour. It is alert and watchful without being aggressive. It can be independent but generally wants to please.

Ejercicio

About an hour or more a day of walks and play. Agility, flyball, herding and long country walks suit it well.

Aseo

Brush through the long, dry coat a few times a week to prevent mats; it is kept natural and not trimmed for show. Shedding is moderate.

Educación

Responds well to friendly, varied, reward-based training. Keep it fun, as repetition bores it quickly.

Salud

The Schapendoes is generally healthy; progressive retinal atrophy and hip dysplasia are the main conditions breeders screen for. Ask the breeder for the parents' eye and hip results.

Pruebas de salud que suelen hacer los criadores

  • Caderas (HD)
  • Examen ocular

Sobre la raza

The Schapendoes is a traditional sheepdog of the Dutch heathlands, especially the province of Drenthe. Numbers fell sharply in the 20th century, and the breed was rebuilt after the Second World War, largely through the efforts of Dutch cynologist P.M.C. Toepoel.

It is a happy, agile dog that is affectionate with its family and usually sociable with other dogs. It likes to play and keeps a puppyish streak well into adulthood. It is alert and will bark to announce visitors. With daily activity and regular coat care it fits well into an active family home.

¿Sabías que…?

Its name joins the Dutch word schaap (sheep) with 'does', an old word for a shaggy dog.
