Cuidados

Carácter

Gentle, friendly and affectionate, with a mellow nature indoors once exercised. Can be sensitive and dislikes harsh handling.

Ejercicio

Needs one to two hours a day, including some off-lead running in safe areas. Field work, scent games and long country walks suit it.

Aseo

Brush the feathering several times a week to prevent tangles; trimming around feet and ears keeps it tidy. Sheds moderately.

Educación

Willing but sometimes easily distracted and slow to mature. Use gentle, positive methods and work steadily on recall.

Salud

Hip and elbow dysplasia, congenital deafness, hypothyroidism and allergies are known in the breed. Ask the breeder for hip, elbow, hearing (BAER) and thyroid results of the parents.

Sobre la raza

The English Setter descends from old 'setting spaniels' used to find birds and crouch so a net could be thrown over them. In the 19th century breeders such as Edward Laverack and Purcell Llewellin refined it into the setter we know, and the breed later split into heavier show lines and lighter working lines.

It is a soft, sweet-natured dog that loves company and gets along with most people and animals. It needs daily exercise and regular coat care, and it can be slow to mature. Expect an affectionate shadow that can be playful well into adulthood.

¿Sabías que…?

The word "belton" for the setter's speckled coat was coined by Edward Laverack after the village of Belton in Northumberland.
