Is it the right breed for you?

Great if you …

  • hunt or live in rural, wooded country

  • enjoy active outdoor life

Think twice if you …

  • live in a city apartment
  • want a quiet dog
  • share your home with small animals

Care

Temperament

Courageous, determined and resilient when hunting; calm and affectionate at home. Generally sociable with other dogs, especially when raised in a pack.

Exercise

Needs daily long walks and regular chances to run or track. Scent trailing, hunting and hiking in rough country suit it well.

Grooming

Both coats are low maintenance: a weekly brush, plus checks of ears, feet and skin after outings in scrub.

Training

Responsive to calm, consistent handling but independent on scent. Recall needs ongoing work and a long line in open land.

Health

A rustic working breed with no widely documented breed-specific diseases; hip dysplasia and injuries from rough terrain are the main concerns. Ask the breeder for hip results of the parents.

About the breed

The Segugio Maremmano comes from the Maremma, the coastal hills and scrubland of southern Tuscany and northern Lazio. Local hunters kept these hounds for generations to drive wild boar out of dense undergrowth, and the breed was officially recognised in Italy and then provisionally by the FCI in 2018. It comes in a short, smooth coat and a harsher rough coat.

It is a practical, hardy dog with a strong voice and real courage on the hunt. With its family it is affectionate and fairly calm, but it is happiest with work to do and space to move.

The breed was provisionally accepted by the FCI in 2018, making it one of the newer Italian breeds on the international list.
