About the breed
The Montenegrin Mountain Hound was formerly known as the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound. It comes from the rugged mountains of Montenegro, where it was bred to hunt hare and fox over steep, rocky ground, often in harsh weather.
It is a sturdy, medium-sized dog, glossy black with tan markings, with a dense coat and great stamina. It is still a working breed and very rare outside the Balkans. At home it is usually calm and loyal to its family, while being reserved with strangers. It needs an active, outdoor life.
Did you know?
Until the 1990s the breed was registered with the FCI as the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound.
