About the breed

The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne is one of the oldest French hound types, kept in Brittany for centuries for hunting wolf, boar and fox. It became rare in the mid-20th century and was revived by a small group of breeders who kept it as a working hound.

It has a harsh, golden to brick-red coat, strong legs and a lively, courageous character. It is sociable with people and other dogs and usually easy to live with when it has enough to do. Its stamina, voice and nose mean it needs active, outdoorsy owners and good fencing.

'Fauve' means tawny in French and describes its golden to brick-red coat.
