About the breed
The Greek Hound, listed by the FCI as the Hellenic Hound, is an old scent hound from the mountains of mainland Greece. It developed in relative isolation as a hare hunter, working hard terrain in heat that would tire many other hounds.
It is a medium-sized, lean dog in black and tan, with a strong, musical voice. It hunts alone or in packs. Outside Greece it is rare. At home it is usually loyal and calm with its family but can be wary of strangers. It needs an active, outdoor life and an owner who understands hounds.
Did you know?
In Greek it is called Ellinikós Ichnilátis, meaning Hellenic tracer.
