Care

Temperament

Outgoing, lively and affectionate, with the stubborn streak of a true scent hound. Usually good with other dogs and friendly to visitors.

Exercise

Needs at least an hour and a half of activity daily; scent work, tracking and long country walks suit it well.

Grooming

Brush the harsh coat weekly and check ears and beard after outdoor time; light hand-tidying keeps it neat.

Training

Willing but easily distracted by scent; keep sessions short and rewarding and work steadily on recall.

Health

A generally healthy hound; ear infections, hip dysplasia and occasional eye problems are reported in rough-coated Vendéen breeds. Hip and eye checks are sensible, so ask the breeder for results.

Health tests breeders usually do

  • Hips (HD)
  • Eye examination

Ask the breeder to show you the parents' results.

About the breed

The Briquet Griffon Vendéen is the medium-sized member of the Vendée griffon family, sitting between the Grand Griffon and the bassets. It almost vanished after the Second World War and was rebuilt by dedicated French breeders, who kept it as a practical hunting hound for roe deer and boar.

It is a sociable, cheerful dog with a tousled coat and a strong voice. Most are friendly with people and other dogs, and settle well indoors after a proper run. Its nose leads it everywhere, though, so it needs secure fencing and owners who enjoy long walks in all weather.

Did you know?

'Briquet' is an old French term for a medium-sized hound, placing the breed between the large and basset Vendéen griffons.
