Moderate daily walks and free time outdoors; avoid heavy exercise while growing.

The short, dense coat needs a weekly brush; it sheds a lot during the seasonal moult.

Intelligent and willing but sensitive to its handler's mood; gentle, consistent training suits it best.
Gesondheid
Hip and elbow dysplasia and heart conditions are the main concerns, along with bloat in this large, deep-chested breed. Ask the breeder for the parents' hip, elbow and heart results.

Oor die ras
The Broholmer is named after the Broholm estate on the island of Funen, where Count Niels Frederik Sehested bred these dogs in the 18th century. It was used as an estate guard and for hunting, and was popular in Copenhagen's markets. After the Second World War the breed almost disappeared, and it was revived from the 1970s by Danish enthusiasts.
The modern Broholmer is a calm, friendly family dog. It is good-natured, self-confident and watchful. Its large size means it needs space, careful puppyhood and an owner who can manage a strong dog.
